The Sound of Gravel is an incredibly gripping, heartbreaking memoir by Ruth Wariner about her life growing up in a polygamous Mormon cult. It’s a terrifying story of deprivation and abuse, and the harm that extreme religious beliefs so often inflict, especially upon women and children. Ruth’s story is more than that, though. Throughout it all, her deep love for her family shines through vividly. Her growing ability to see through the religious bullshit that ruined her mother’s life, and her bravery to do something about it when she most needed to, make for an inspiring read.
Once I started this one I could barely put it down, although I was tempted to throw it against the wall a few times out of sheer rage!
